Costco is a discount buying club that has locations throughout the US. They provide amazing bargains for nearly everything for your home. They have an optical department at nearly all of them. In fact, they actually have some pretty good brands and selection. Costco has an eye doctor and they provide eye exams on site. In fact, they are pretty reasonable compared to most independent optometrists. They also offer occasional promotions, coupons and discounts not found at JC Penney, Sears and other places. They do have a really nice face shape guide if you are trying to buy something online.

Regarding their lenses, they offer their own version of a progressive lens. This is from their website, “With a sharper vision in all conditions members purchasing KS HD lenses will receive an unprecedented degree of customization. Included on all HD lenses is our state of the art anti-reflective treatment. Our anti-reflective treatment gives each lens a cosmetically appealing look while providing better scratch resistance.”

Eye Exam Costs at CostcoIf you are fairly young and do not foresee any issues with your vision, then Costco might be a good fit for you. However, we generally recommend getting a more comprehensive exam at an Independent Optometrist that may have more advanced technology to detect issues like hypertension, diabetes and more. The eye exam costs at Costco may not be as relevant as the medical impact. An eye exam may be one of the more economical and fastest methods for early detection of heart attacks, strokes and diabetic conditions.

We also recommend getting retinal imaging scan from a machine like Optos. This is like an HD picture of your retina. It will cost you about $30 more but well worth it. Your optometrist can keep it on file so it can serve as your baseline. This helps them detect changing medical conditions each year.

It is important to note that they do NOT take VSP which is the largest provider of vision insurance in the US. In fact, Walmart is an Out-Of-Network provider for the many of the popular vision insurance companies.

  1. Had a appointment to have an eye exam at Costco, they confirmed my appointment and said it was going to be $89. They don’t take insurance and no discount for seniors. Took my business elsewhere at a much lower cost.

  2. An eye examination should be part of everyone’s normal health routine and is an important part of looking after your eyes, but it’s more than a simple test of your sight. This is definitely expensive but not over your eye health.

  3. Just got notice from Kaiser Perm that my Eye Exam was denied coverage! Ticked off now. The Kaiser Pleasanton, CA, in-house optometrist charges: ‘intermediate exam’ at $192, ‘Refractive state’ additional $50. NO KP Plan discount at all. I am going to appeal. I would not have gone there if I knew that price; I was NOT charged a co-pay at check in either, so I had no warning. BTW- Contact fitting extra at $125 or so- but I was told THAT upfront, so I’m ok with that.

  4. Last year, i was told that my exam had no copay because i had VSP. Sure enough no out of pocket cost to me. Fast forward to today my son had to pay 39.00. Not to happy.

  5. I was actually told a month ago from Costco here locally that the eye exam was 49 bucks. Today, they not only said it was 60 bucks, but that it had NEVER been 49 bucks! Taking my business elsewhere.

  6. The sign says $49 for eyeglasses exam (eyeglasses prescription ONLY) and $89 for contact lens exam (INCLUDES eyeglasses AND contact lens prescriptions). How did it come out to be $80 for eyeglasses exam and $150 for contact lenses exams?

  7. I’ve had eye exams at Costco with no problems, as has wife and kids. The eye doc at my local Costco is a professional, and knows what he’s doing, and he’s been there for years. Then it’s on-line to Zenni optical for glasses – starting at about $7 for complete single vision glasses, with dozens of frames to choose from. Bifocals are $30-ish with the least expensive frames.

  8. Jason – they are all “licensed, independent Optometrists”. They just have an affiliation with a retail store.

  9. There is no difference in a licensed Costco OD versus a licensed independent OD. As well as there is no difference for a doctor who scored C’s vs A’s they are both doctors and likely went to the same schools. They all refer out to MD’s at the least sign of legal risk. More importantly just get an annual eye exam. Funny the comments are all the same for all compared eye exam costs. And they say don’t go don’t trust them. That’s like saying go only to the dealer for oil as they are the only competent oil changers. Hope that helps.

  10. I would not get an exam here. I would only go to a licensed, independent Optometrists. Dont roll the dice on your eyes.
